Can't reblog since it was an Ask reply, but I'm cross-posting this from my regular tumblr:
forgetwhatyouknow asked: Not anon, but I started following you last year after fuckyeahsailorchibimoon reblogged your post about Chibiusa’s relationship with Usagi and I always loved how you put it because you would think everyone would understand that’s how it is, but apparently not. When you mentioned the thing about the concept of self, regardless of where you were in time, I always wondered if you had more thoughts on that and if you did, what they were. ———
Thank you so much! I have a lot of Opinions about BSSM and a lot of them relate to Chibiusa because I adore her so much.
The inspiration about the whole concept of “Self” regardless of time was admittedly inspired by reading “The Time Traveler’s Wife”. Some people were squicked by Clare sleeping with a Henry from the past that had time-traveled to her current timeline while she was arguing with present!Henry. But he is still Henry. He remembers doing it because it was something he had done months ago. It’s not like she cheated on him. It made me think, and some of that spilled over into Sailormoon, specifically Usagi and Chibiusa’s relationship.
I think that the series unintentionally gives an impression of Usagi/Sailormoon and Neo-Queen Serenity as being separate entities and they are not. When Sailormoon levels up to Neo-Queen Serenity at the end of R and is suddenly stronger and more mature, it’s not just changing outfits and just getting serious. I don’t think it’s that Serenity time-traveled back. I think Sailormoon actually incarnated her older self (which already exists if time is cyclical and not linear).
It’s just strange to try and get your head around and I’m having trouble putting my musings into actual words. Consciously, Usagi is not Serenity, but Serenity is Usagi, just due to Usagi’s linear lifetime. But since time itself is not linear, both exist already so Serenity is already part of Usagi’s being.
Sailormoon’s previous incarnation, the Moon Princess, is not the same person at all but merely the same soul — the Princess physically died and was reborn as Usagi, but the Neo-Queen is just Usagi grown up and the same person. And Sailormoon still channels the Princess, that aspect of her eternal soul, in times of need. (Even after coming to realize her future self of Neo-Queen Serenity)
Hm. I don’t know if that actually explored anything new or if I was just making blatant observations from the series, but I hope it answered your question? :0
